Zachry's fascination with trees has continued through her adult life, and today they become her legacy with the opening of the Mollie Steves Zachry Texas Arboretum at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Wide paths meander through the 16-acre site, former ranchland that's a living laboratory for Texas oaks, elms, pecans and understory trees such as persimmon, agarita and elbow bush. About a mile of trails will take visitors through displays of xeric specimens, varieties suited for growing under power lines and an exhibit on oak wilt. Visitors can relax on swings hanging from limbs in a grove of live oaks or have lunch at picnic tables shaded by the canopy. Branches of two trees - one living and one dead - are entwined on the tree Luci Baines Johnson named the Old Couple. A clone of the Austin Treaty Oak has been planted along the trail, and wildflower center staff will collect acorns and seeds to propagate descendants of other trees. People are a lot more interested in flowers and botanical gardens.
